California African American Museum

Logo & Branding

The California African American Museum, located in Los Angeles, was founded in 1977 and was the first state-supported African American museum of art, history, and culture. The museum opened in July 1984 alongside the opening of the Los Angeles Olympic Games.

The purpose of this fictitious project was to rebrand an identity-based museum by creating a new design system that can be applied across the organization. After developing a list of key attributes for the museum, I created a logo for the museum. The accessible custom color palette was inspired by the colors of the hot African sun. A typographic palette for the design system was selected and applied to a stationery system comprised of a business card, letterhead, and envelope. Finally, a series of three webpages were designed utilizing the new logo, typography, and color palette I developed.
